ABSTRACT

In view of the importance of primary health care as a key to the
achievement of the goal health for all and the role of the nurses in the
field of PHC, there is an urgent need to prepare the graduate nurses to
work within the community. The aim of the study is to assess the present
nursing curriculum in the college of Nursing, University of Mosul in
relation to PHC nursing.
To achieve the early stated goal, the following were utilized:
morbidity and mortality statistical reports in Vital Statistics Department
at Nineva Health Office issued by Ministry of Health in
٢٠٠١; the
officially adopted graduate nurse job description by Ministry of Health in
٢٠٠١; the curriculum currently adopted by the College of Nursing,
University of Mosul; and three questionnaires forms. The first one is
applied to a sample of teaching staff consisting of
٢٠ members of the
Department of Clinical Medical Science and Deans of Colleges of
Nursing in Mosul and Baghdad. This questionnaire is used to assess
curriculum content of knowledge, attitudes and skills regarding PHC
areas. The second questionnaire, showed the wide range of duties of
nursing categories by applying the questionnaire to a sample of nurses
consisting of (٨٠) nurses distributed over (٢٢) primary health care centres
in Mosul City. The third questionnaire is adopted by WHO in (١٩٨٥); and
applied to (٦) of the college teaching staff who are responsible for the (٦)
subjects related to nursing: medical surgical nursing, maternity, pediatric
nursing, rehabilitation and physiotherapy, community health nursing and
psychiatric nursing. The aim is to spot the weak points in both theoretical
and practical aspects.
The study found that the officially adopted graduate nurse job
description by the Iraqi Ministry of Health was too brief to tell enough
about the details of such graduates duties at PHC centres and there is an
overlapping between nurses job in the hospitals and PHC centres. During
the period of observation of nursing staff working at PHC centres, a clear
nursing duties has properly been identified. Evaluation of the extent of
coverage of the nursing curriculum for the essential contents of PHC
nursing revealed that the satisfaction acceptable scores were below the
average acceptable scores in almost all area and functions except in very
few instance. Examination of the college aims showed that the college
has only achieved ٧% of the characteristics of PHC nursing explicitly.
