ABSTRACT
The study was conducted on 103 healthy women, aged 19-45 years, taking oral contraceptive pills (microgynon levonorgestrel 0.15 mg+ ethinyl estradiol 0.03 mg) (N=92) or injection (medroxyprogesterone 150mg) (N=11) for a period of 0.5-12 years to investigate the effects of contraceptives on body weight, blood pressure, serum glucose concentration, liver enzymes activities and lipid profile.
One hundred non- contraceptive users participated in the study as a control group. They were drawn from the same population and matched for age with the contraceptive-users group.
Blood samples (8 ml) were obtained from contraceptive users and non-user groups after 12 hours of fasting. The serum obtained from the blood was used for the estimation of serum triglyceride, total cholesterol and HDL-cholesterol concentrations by enzymatic colorimetric methods
and liver enzymes activities by colorimetric methods and serum glucose concentration by enzymatic colorimetric methods. Serum LDL-cholesterol concentration was calculated by using Friedwald equation, blood pressure was measured in sitting position using sphygmomanometer and body mass index was calculated as the weight in kilograms divided by the squared height in meters.
Data obtained from the study revealed insignificant difference
between body weight of contraceptive users and non-users, non excessive elevation of B.P, a significant elevation of serum glucose concentration, no changes in liver enzymes activities and a significant elevation of lipid parameters except HDL-cholesterol when compared with those of the non-users.
